TOGETHER WE CAN REDUCE
HOMICIDES IN DC BY 60% IN
5 YEARS

A Collaborative Community Impact Fund

at the Greater Washington Community Foundation

Investing in Community Powered Systems

of Public Safety in DC

In conjunction with the DC government's violence reduction efforts, in consultation with the nation's top gun violence reduction experts, and in partnership with trusted community leaders, Peace For DC will invest in proven solutions to prevent and interrupt the cycle of violence that plagues our most vulnerable neighborhoods.   Driven by research and data, and through strategically enhancing community capacity, Peace For DC will amplify and accelerate the District government's and the community's gun violence reduction efforts.
A 60% reduction in homicides will save 300 lives.
So let's get to work.

THERE IS NO RACIAL OR ECONOMIC JUSTICE WITHOUT
TACKLING GUN VIOLENCE

The same DC communities that have historically suffered from disinvestment
and social injustice have also disproportionately experienced the
trauma and terror of gun violence.

DC has one of the highest homicide rates in the country.  In addition to the human toll, gun violence costs DC over $3 billion per year.

But gun violence in DC is driven by a very small number of groups and individuals.  Data shows that the actions of a relative few - drive the majority of shootings and homicides.

By focusing directly on the individuals most at risk of being perpetrators or victims of gun violence, with therapies, opportunities, deep long-term engagement and love, we can stop the shootings and save lives.

WHAT WE FUND

Evidence-based strategies focused on the groups, individuals, and families at highest risk of involvement in gun violence, delivered by community-based programs and organizations.

We can make significant progress in the shortest timeframe by focusing on three pillars: Transformation of individuals and communities most at risk of gun violence, Treating Trauma in every form, and Training individuals and communities to be able to be their best and create their own systems of safety. Peace For DC will fund programs that address these three pillars, and we will work with partners to advocate for system change and sustained efforts.

The District is at a crossroads, and the pieces of the puzzle can only come together with robust philanthropic and community support.  We cannot let DC remain one of the most deadly places in the U.S. Eliminating gun violence is key to establishing racial and economic equity.  Until we make every street safe, for every person, we are not living up to the promise of a civil society.

Something’s got to change.

Together, we can create and maintain Peace For DC.

OUR STORY

TURNING ADVOCACY INTO ACTION

Founded by gun violence survivors and community activists, Peace For DC is committed to amplifying and accelerating government investments in gun violence reduction.  We welcome collaboration from all sources, and hold our elected leaders accountable for embracing innovative but proven solutions and a comprehensive plan to eliminate gun violence. Peace For DC was started in order to provide sustainable funding, and capacity- and skill-building resources, to the small organizations providing life-saving prevention and intervention work in the DC neighborhoods most impacted by gun violence.
